Meshaev twins, Amor & chess in The Event

(Act Three)

According to Barbashin (the wit whom Meshaev the Second met at the railway station), the Meshaev twins are impersonated by one and the same actor who plays one brother (Osip Mikheevich, aka Meshaev the First) good and another (Mikhey Mikheevich, aka Meshaev the Second) bad.

In Theophile Gautier's story Deux acteurs pour un role ("Two Actors for One Part," 1841), one actor (a former Heidelberg student) plays Mephistopheles bad and another (the devil himself) good. The killer Barbashin and the private detective Barboshin (whom Troshcheykin hired to protect himself from Barbashin) seem to be two incarnations of one and the same character: the devil.

In Heine's poem Der wei?e Elefant ("The White Elephant," 1851) the stargazer mentions Theophile Gautier:

Die Dichter jagen vergebens nach Bildern,
Um ihre wei?e Haut zu schildern;
Selbst Gautier ist dessen nicht capabel, –
O diese Wei?e ist implacable!

Poets hunt images in vain,
Her white skin's beauty to explain;
For this even Gautier's not capable -
O this whiteness is implacable!

As a young man, Barboshin was a poet, student and dreamer. Under the chestnuts of Heidelberg he loved an amazon:

(Act Three)

Barboshin promises to walk under the windows of the Troshcheykins, while Amor, Morpheus and little Brom hover above their bed. In "The White Elephant" the stargazer compares Countess Bianka (with whom Mahawasant's favorite elephant fell in love in his dream) to Amor's colossal church:

„Das ist Gott Amors kolossale
Domkirche, der Liebe Kathedrale;
Als Lampe brennt im Tabernakel
Ein Herz, das ohne Falsch und Makel."

'Tis Cupid's own colossal church,
Love's cathedral; where there besmirch
No taint nor falsity this heart,
That tabernacle light imparts.

and the elephant to a four-footed Werther:

„Sehnsucht verzehrt ihn seit jener Stund’,

Yearning consumes him, he's got it bad,
And he, who was always so healthy and glad,
Was changed to a four-footed Werther henceforth,
And is dreaming about a Lotte up north.

In Goethe's Die Leiden des jungen Werther ("The Sorrows of Young Werther," 1774) Werther shoots himself dead. I suspect that, after she learnt (from Meshaev the Second) that Barbashin had left the city and gone abroad forever, Lyubov' commits suicide and in the "sleep of death" dreams of Barbashin disguised as Waltz (the main character in The Waltz Invention).

Heine + Russland + Vera + Bog + konets + slon = Heiland + rus + vesna + Berg + okno + solntse

Slon is Russian for "elephant" and "bishop" (chessman). In Slonim (Vera Nabokov's maiden name) there is slon. The portrait painter Troshcheykin who is mortally afraid of Barbashin delaet iz mukhi slona ("makes mountains out of mole hills;" aus einer Muecke macht einen Elefanten, as the Germans say).

According to Antonina Pavlovna (Lyubov's and Vera's mother), Meshaev the Second is not peshka (a pawn):

(Act One)

Perhaps, in terms of chess, Meshaev the Second is slon (a bishop)?

In his poem Jetzt wohin? ("Whereto now?" 1830) Heine mentions, among other countries, Russland (Russia):

Russland, dieses schoene Reich,
wuerde mir vielleicht behagen,
Doch im Winter koennte ich
Dort die Knute nicht ertragen.

Russia, that beautiful empire,
perhaps would please me,
But in winter I wouldn't be able
to bear the whip there.
