Dear List,

I am not a Slavicist and did not know Cathy well, but we met at the Kyoto
conference and bonded over our love of detective fiction. She was
beginning to work on Nabokov's metaphysical detective stories, the subject
of her paper there. We had each brought lots of books to read while
traveling--this was in the days before ebooks, for me at least--and
exchanged with each other the ones we had already consumed. I think I
ended up with her copy of the Judge Dee mystery stories.

Cathy was warm, enthusiastic, and a great conversationalist. I am sorry
that I won't be able to share anecdotes and reading material with her at
the next Nabokov conference I attend.
