Dear List,

I have always believed that many of the parallel themes and motifs in Borges's and Nabokov's work reflect the fact that both grew up in Anglophile families, reading the same tales of doubles and detectives by writers in English (Poe, Stevenson, Conan Doyle, and others), and then translating them into their own language and literature.

P.S. I owe several members of the List warm thanks for their kind suggestions about connections between Disney and Nabokov. As soon as I have graded another batch of papers, I will send an official note of thanks detailing the insights I received!
