There seems to be some agreement that the Pale Fire poem is either a
masterpiece, or lousy, or something in between. This brings to mind
what Conrad Brenner wrote in his introduction to The Real Life of
Sebastian Knight (New Directions, 1959): "The balance of this book is
so fine that we never know if Sebastian himself might have lacked
stature and been instead artistically and personally precious."
