Dear Carolyn,

I suggest mountaineering books from the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. We had a wonderful batch at the Harvard Mountaineering Club
library (which happened to be in my entry of Lowell House and was
stocked with excellent Vermouth). It's true that the phenomenon was not
unknown to polar explorers, although they seem to have written much less
about it. Happy Holidays.

>p.s. Can anyone verify this story or is my memory playing tricks? I
looked in all the polar exploration books I have at home and cannot find
anything like this. Nor have I managed to google up anything.
