EDNOTE.

Yannicke Chupin's excellent response to my query (her ref. to "Memoires =
d'un ane") make it possible for me to lay to rest my speculation that =
the BB had some remote connection to that scene in ADA. VN mentions =
illustrated scenes fron other Segur books in _Speak, Memory!_ and I =
have noticed that his allusions to kiddy classics (e.g. Mayne Reid & de =
Segur) usually refer more to the illustrations than the text. (Take a =
look at my piece "Volodya reads English" on ZEMBLA.)

I followed up Yannicke's lead and located the illustrated first edition =
and discovered that de Segur's fire episode did not rate an =
illustration, nor, as Yannicke's note indicated, did the text provide =
anything that might have provided any link to ADA. The highway and =
byways of the search provided a couple of hours of fine entertainment. =
The donkey saves his young mistress by dragging her out of the burning =
barn.
