p.s. to Thomas NEDNOTE. In reply to George Shimanovich. I apologize if your message was not posted. It is very rare that I squelch a message and then only after conferring with the sender. I do admit that I screw up any now and then since 1)I have a rotten memory, 2) am easily confused ( I handle a lot of E-mail) & 3) am a technological idiot. Also, on occasion, the "suppressed" item was not received. Lastly, I am all too often very busy with things other than NABOKV-L :).
(Please note this is the first time, I have EVER used an ingratiating "smiley," although I just finished a paper
establishing VN as the originator of the smiley in 1924.

However in many instances liberal intelligentsia does acts as a dictator: to discerning opinion of others, - in my case our respectful Editor did not even acknowledge my answer to condescending posting by Ms Kunin. I would like to encourage 'texture' thread in Pale Fire discussion but all I am allowed, it seems, is anonymous cc.

I would like to take Mrs Kunin on her word. Do you want to respond to onlooker on the Forum or only when discolored posting passes criteria of your censor?

'Split personality of poor Shade' approach is the least interesting of all I've read in this list.
It is one of many traps left by Nabokov in his texts for people who prefer template (and inherently banal) way of reading: was it split personalities 'school' of Dr Wind that was so popular in 1950's? Which is opposite to re-reading beyond the boundaries set by any name or abbreviated school. I look in literary criticism for the outline, hint, promise to develop MY artistic abilities.

To answer question of authorship of Pale Fire one is forced to answer questions that in real life are unanswerable. So may be there is more to find in the texture that in text, after all? I like invitation to the mirror world of Zembla: 'Not flimsy nonsense, but a web of sense.' One should keep his/her mirrors clean in Zembla or risk being analyzed.

No "personal animosity or mudslinging" here. But as the shrew says,a rather mean meaning, and I wonder why you continue to find it necessary. But please! don't tell me. I'd rather hear from those weary onlookers.

Was Toscaninni "dangerous" to anybody? He was a dictator, perhaps the last of the great dictator/conductors. Shall we try him in the Hague? Cocteau in his film Orphee can be seen in a "cameo" playing God. Should we have locked him up? Attempting to solve a literary puzzle hardly makes one a religious or political fanatic., and the World of Art (Mir Iskusstva) has never been a democratic state.
