Dear All-

Perhaps approaching the VN/Music conundrum in a less literal way would bare
fruit.

VN's natural proclivity towards assigning colors to letters and words (the
name of the phenomenon escapes me) might be seen as corresponding to the
ability of a musical composer to organize abstract sounds into a unified,
emotional satisfying whole. Arguably, you could explain away any art form
as a unification of abstractions (and after eating a large lunch with an
over flowing in-box menacing my desk, I won't be able to pursue this line
of thought to a satisfactory conclusion), but perhaps the "music" of VN's
writing (and his chess problems) can be traced to this quirk of perception.

Sincerely,

Greg Mills
