I believe that's precisely the point. The reader is led to think that the man
must be a traveling salesman or the like. Yet there is no confirmation, and one
cannot be certain. Just one additional word might have done away with all
ambiguity. This word is lacking. So one must reflect if there are no other ways
in which the man could be the author's representative. There are. They are
interesting ways. It's an opening up of perspectives.
