Is this representative of Nabokov's poetry output? ... even from a small sample of these re-uses, we can see certain works are re-used more than others. These anthologies are more likely to be gateway readers for Nabokov too, as a reader may stumble across Nabokov due to a generic interest in science fiction, for example."

Jansy Mello: It would be interesting to learn about what are the re-used favorites among Nabokov's writings. My recollection of Joyce Carol Oates's inclusion of the first chapter of "Speak,Memory" in one of her anthologies didn't extend to the information that it selected "Essays," not short-stories (although, in retrospect, I should have realized that...) Nabokov's essays, more than his fiction, seem to carry the weight of his literary afterlife abroad.

Now I remember that, together with Jorio Dauster, I translated one of Nabokov's poems for a magazine of photography called "Zum"*

Ensaios visuais + Ensaios escritos: Para o observador a arte é uma experiência emocional, mas trilhar o campo do significado, é um prazer a mais. Isso, só lendo. E os textos da Zum são ótimos. Suas páginas trazem o ensaio do all american Jeff Wall, assinado por Sergio Burgi, coordenador de fotografia do Instituto Moreira Salles, e se debruçam sobre a fase lírica do genial Miguel de Rio Branco em texto assinado por Rodrigo Naves. A Zum mergulha no olhar amazônico de Luiz Braga e explora outras brasilidades, a continental de Jorge Bodansky e a suburbana de Julio Bittencourt, comentada com toda ginga pela fina pena do jornalista Joaquim Ferreira dos Santos. Mas a Zum também vai a lugares profundos. Sacia o nosso voyeurismo através das lentes do japonês Kohei Yoshiyuki e a nossa perversidade ao nos defrontar com os retratos do Museu do Genocídio Tuol Sleng, no Camboja, mas fecha com delicadeza com "O Instantâneo" (1927), um poema de um Nabokov jovem sobre uma tarde de um "elísio estival", ilustrado com igual frescor pelo alagoano Jonathas de Andrade e sua fotografia, "Amor e felicidade no casamento. // O editor Thyago Nogueira1 é fotógrafo e editor da Companhia das Letras, co-organizador do livro Por trás daquela foto: contos e ensaios sobre fotografia (Companhia das Letras, 2011). Resume assim o projeto editorial da Zum: "É uma revista de boa fotografia para bons leitores, para leitores exigentes". A direção de arte - ótima - é de Elisa von Radow. Chapeau!

Vladimir Nabokov

Upon the beach at violet-blue noon,
in a vacational Elysium
a striped bather took
a picture of his happy family.

And very still stood his small naked boy,
and his wife smiled,
in ardent light, in sandy bliss
plunged as in silver.

An by the striped man
directed at the sunny sand
blinked with a click of its black eyelid
the camera's ocellus.

That bit of film imprinted
all it could catch,
the stirless child, his radiant mother,

and a toy pail and two beach spades,
and some way off a bank of sand,
and I, the accidental spy,
I in the background have been also taken.

Next winter, in an unknown house,
grandmother will be shown an album,
and in that album there will be a snapshot,
and in that snapshot I shall be.

My likeness among strangers,
one of my August days,
my shade they never noticed,
my shade they stole in vain.
