There was another famous debate about authorship that VN did sign in on, namely the Song of Igor's Campaign. He opted for calling it good literature, and withheld an opinion whether it was a clever forgery or the ' real thing".He also translated it,and that's all we need to know. The pieces can be judged as they stand. The iliad is a great story-poem even if we do not know Homer in detail or as a person.

I couldn't agree more. This list is refreshingly civil, a real rarity in my experience. It would be a shame if it descended to the level of, say, some of the Nabokov-Wilson letters :).
I apologize if I got a little carried away in my last post. As tempting as it is to lure into the Oxfordian camp great minds like Brian Boyd's (and the other brilliant scholars' here), from now on I'll limit my non-VN authorship talk to private correspondence.
