A musical aside to Turgenev & musical gradus ad parnassum:

Turgenev's beloved Pauline Viardot, nee Garcia, was not a voice without a brain
(as many singers are said to be). I recently acquired a set of Chopin Mazurkas
that Viardot rewrote as songs. I haven't had a chance to look through them and
so cannot comment on the quality, but the idea of setting mazurkas (as opposed
to waltzes or berceuses for example) is certainly exceptional.

Subject: [NABOKV-L] Gradus in Feu pale

Alphonse Daudet was surprised that Turgenev who spoke French so well did
not translate his books. According to Daudet (Thirty Years in Paris,
Tourgueneff), the Russian writer was afraid of the Academic Dictionary. He had
no courage to use the phrase les yeux pâle fearing that the Forty Immortals (of
L’Académie française) will not accept the epithet:

Мне помнится, что в очерке, написанном в то время, Тургенев не отважился
сказать «бледные глаза» из страха перед Сорока бессмертными и перед тем, как
они отнесутся к этому эпитету.*

Practically in the next sentence Daudet mentions "Gradus" (a French
lexicon modelled on the Latin Gradus ad Parnassum that should help one write
Latin verses):

Я не впервые сталкивался с подобными страхами: они обуревали и моего друга
Мистраля, тоже заворожённого куполом Академии — этим бутафорским монументом,
фигурирующим в круглой рамке на изданиях Дидо.
Я высказал по этому поводу Тургеневу всё, что накипело у меня на душе, а
именно: что французский язык не мёртвый язык, на котором можно писать по
словарю застывших выражений, расположенных в алфавитном порядке, как в
«Градусе».

VN was not afraid of dictionaries and composed Pale Fire in a foreign idiom.
If I'm not mistaken, yeux (eyes) rhymes with feu (fire).
One of Jakob Gradus's aliases is Jacques de Grey.

In his essay Daudet speaks of Turgenev's judgement about his novel The Nabob:

Ограничусь несколькими словами: «Набоб»-самый замечательный и вместе с тем
самый неровный из всех написанных Вами романов. Если «Фромона и Рислера»
представить в виде прямой, то «Набоба» следовало бы изобразить так: —
/wvwx/, причем верхушки этих зигзагов доступны толькоталанту перворазрядному.
