Skonky died, not 'of his wounds' (as it was viciously rumored) but of a gangrenous afterthought on the part of the least of them, possibly self-inflicted, a sting in the groin (Ada, 1.2)
In Merezhkovski's novel Peter and Alexey (Book Four, "The Flood", chapter IV) tsar Peter I tells his son, tsarevich Alexey: "когда гангрена сделалась в пальце моём, не должен ли я отсечь оный, хотя и часть тела моего? Так и тебя, яко уд* гангренный, отсеку!" ("when my finger is affected by gangrene, shouldn't I cut it off, even though it is a part of my body? And so, like a gangrenous member, I will cut you off!")
Skonky is a nickname of Baron d'Onsky, Demon Veen's rival and adversary in a sword duel. His son has only one arm: at Marina's funeral "d'Onsky's son, a person with only one arm, threw his remaining one around Demon and both wept comme des fontaines." (3.8)
How d'Onsky fils lost his arm is a mystery, but self-mutilation is mentioned elsewhere in Ada (3.5): In a series of sixty-year-old actions which now I can grind into extinction only by working on a succession of words until the rhythm is right, I, Van, retired to my bathroom, shut the door (it swung open at once, but then closed of its own accord) and using a temporary expedient less far-fetched than that hit upon by Father Sergius (who chops off the wrong member in Count Tolstoy's famous anecdote), vigorously got rid of the prurient pressure as he had done the last time seventeen years ago. The hero of Tolstoy's Father Sergius (1898) chops off his finger in order to resist the charms of a young woman who wants to seduce him. (see also my post "Cardinal Grishkin, Baron d'Onsky, Vatican")
Upon being questioned in Demon's dungeon, Marina, laughing trillingly, wove a picturesque tissue of lies; then broke down, and confessed. (1.2)
Russian word for "dungeon" is zastenok. Zastenok (where Peter tortures Alexey) is described in detail in Merezhkovski's novel (Book Ten, "Son and Father", chapter V):
Для пытки приличившихся в злодействах сделано особливое место, называемое застенок, огорожен палисадником и покрыт, для того, что при пытках бывают судьи и секретарь и для записки пыточных речей подьячий.
В застенке же для пытки сделана дыба, состоящая в трёх столбах, из которых два вкопаны в землю, а третий сверху, поперёк.
И когда назначено будет время, то кат или палач явиться должен в застенок с инструментами; а оные суть: хомут шерстяной, к нему пришита верёвка долгая; кнутья и ремень.

Merezhkovski is also the author of "L. Tolstoy and Dostoevski"** (1902). A character in Dostoevski's novel Besy (The Possessed, 1872), Captain Lebyadkin imagines that he lost one arm in the Crimean War. Lebyadkin's mad sister Maria is married to Stavrogin (the main demon in Besy). Soon after his duel with d'Onsky, Demon Veen marries Aqua Durmanov who is to go mad.
*ud is an obsolete word for "member, limb"; taynye udy means "private parts"
**Peter I is mentioned in the first sentence of Merezhkovski's book:
Поколение русских людей, вступившее в сознательную жизнь между восьмидесятыми и девяностыми годами XIX столетия, находится в таком трудном и ответственном положении относительно будущего русской культуры, как, может быть, ни одно из поколений со времени Петра Великого.
Я говорю -- со времени Петра, потому что именно отношение к Петру служит как бы водораздельною чертою двух великих течений русского исторического понимания за последние два века, хотя в действительности раньше Петра и глубже в истории начинается борьба этих двух течений, столь поверхностно и несовершенно обозначаемых словами "западничество" и "славянофильство".
