In a letter to Marina, his unfaithful mistress, Demon wrote: "you said you were in Eve's state, hold the line, let me put on a penyuar. Instead, blocking my ear, you spoke, I suppose, to the man with whom you had spent the night (and whom I would have dispatched, had I not been overeager to castrate him)." Demon had a sword duel with Marina's lover, Baron d'Onsky (according to Marina, a physical wreck and spiritual Samurai, who had gone to Japan forever). From a more reliable source Demon learned the Samurai's real destination was smart little Vatican, a Roman spa... (1.2)
As I pointed out before, in A. K. Tolstoy's poem "Bunt v Vatikane" ("A Riot in Vatican," 1864) the eunuch singers attempt to castrate the Pope Pius IX.
Demon's letter to Marina continues: Now that is the sketch made by a young artist in Parma, in the sixteenth century, for the fresco of our destiny, in a prophetic trance, and coinciding, except for the apple of terrible knowledge,* with an image repeated in two men's minds. Your runaway maid, by the way, has been found by the police in a brothel here [in Nice] and will be shipped to you as soon as she is sufficiently stuffed with mercury.'
According to Merezhkovski, cardinal Cesare Borgia (son of the pope Alexander VI) was lauded by the court poets as a founder of the mercury treatment of syphilis ("the French disease"):

Demon's daughter, Ada is officially his niece. Similarly, Lucrezia Borgia (sister and mistress of Cesare) is officially a niece of pope Alexander VI Borgia (the Roman high priest could not have lawful children):

The burning of sorcerers and witches is often mentioned in Book Fifteen, "The Holy Inquisition," of Merezhkovski's "The Resurrection of Gods." Here are a few excerpts:

"The Resurrection of Gods. Leonardo da Vinci" (1900) is the second novel of Merezhkovski's trilogy "Christ and Antichrist." One of the characters in the trilogy's third novel, "Peter and Alexey," is Pyotr Andreevich Tolstoy (1645-1729), a Russian statesman prominent during and after the reign of Peter I, the ancestor of all the Counts** Tolstoy, including Tolstoy the American, the poet Aleksei Konstantinovich Tolstoy (author of "The Riot in Vatican"), the novelist Leo Tolstoy and Aleksei Nikolaevich Tolstoy, the author of "Peter I" (1929-34), the novel for which he received the Stalin prize in 1941. Colonel St. Alin, a scoundrel, is one of the seconds in Demon's duel with d'Onsky (1.2).
...such nymphs were really very much alike because of their elemental limpidity since the similarities of young bodies of water are but murmurs of natural innocence and double-talk mirrors, that's my hat, his is older, but we [Demon and d'Onsky] have the same London hatter (1.2)
In Tolstoy's "The Riot in Vatican" the pope says to eunuchs that the thing they are missing is not a hat (if Priapus himself were to lose that thing, no doctor could help):
