Dorothy Vinelander retired to a subarctic monastery town (Ilemna, now Novostabia) where eventually she married a Mr Brod or Bred, tender and passionate, dark and handsome, who traveled in eucharistials and other sacramental objects throughout the Severniya Territorii and who subsequently was to direct, and still may be directing half a century later, archeological reconstructions at Goreloe (the 'Lyaskan Herculanum'); what treasures he dug up in matrimony is another question. (Ada, 3.8)

Evkharistia (Eucharist, the sacrament of Holy Communion; the sacrifice of Mass; the Lord's Supper;* the consecrated elements of the Holy Communion, esp. the bread; the giving of thanks; spiritual communion with God) is mentioned in Merezhkovski's poem Pesnya solntsa (Song of the Sun, 1894):

Why do you not hear me, madman,
lowering the look of your blind eyes,
and do not accept with your dead heart
my Eucharist?

On the other hand, Svyatoe Prichastie (the Holy Communion) is mentioned in Merezhkovski's "The Resurrection of Gods. Leonardo da Vinci" (Book Sixteen, "Leonardo, Michelangelo and Rafael," chapter II):

(The pope Leo X, son of Lorenzo de'Medici, recites the fragments of two new poems in the taste of Virgil. In the first of them the Holy Communion is described as "divine food concealed for people with poor eyesight in the guise of Ceres and Bacchus." The second poem is Fracastoro's famous Syphilis. Its characters include nymph America and sun god Apollo. The mercury lake is also mentioned in it.) On Antiterra (Earth's twin planet on which Ada is set), smart little Vatican is a Roman spa. (1.2)

One of the characters in Merezhkovski's book on Leonardo is the Archbishop of Novgorod. "The Song of Igor's Campaign" begins and ends in Novgorod, the capital of Old Rus. The Novgorod Kremlin is washed by the Volkhov river that flows from Lake Ilmen' to Lake Ladoga.

*The Lord's Supper is the sacrament in commemoration of the Last Supper. The Last Supper is a late 15th century mural painting by Leonardo in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria della Grazie, Milan.
