As for the idea that swooners were sweaters, I would have to disagree. If all of the other clothes are summer in nature (he is picking her up from summer camp) and therefore light and revealing, I find it less probable that he is buying sweaters for her.

Swooners seem to me to be updated bloomers - - i.e. panties.
