On the off chance that I might be included amongst the tortured and I suppose torturing interpreters to whom you refer, I'll offer a mini response: the publishing phase of PF as brilliantly decoded by Mary Bellino (thank you, Mary, I'd never manage to work that all out) doesn't affect the possible duality of Shade and Kinbote - - as she pointed out.

It would be interesting to see Mary's knowledge of publishing applied to Ada, in which the oddly named Ronald Oranger - - one of the few characters to survive the book's fictional publication - - seems to play an important (though mystifying to me) role - - anothe r bow-tied character, by the way.
