I think you are probably correct, Carolyn. Even if VN didn't see the 1949 Broadway musical or 1958 Hollywood film of "South Pacific," he might have heard the song (especially when tuning in to American popular music while researching Lolita). And yes, Jansy, the alphabetical apple pie is surely an ingredient as well.
