FROM ETTRICK to EMPIRE: NEW PERSPECTIVES IN JAMES HOGG STUDIES
Conference hosted by the Department of English Studies, University of
Stirling, 7-9 August 2007
Plenary Address: Ian Duncan (UC Berkeley)
This three-day conference at Stirling, the home of the S/SC Edition,
seeks to raise new questions to debate and reflect upon Hogg's fiction
in light of his current re-evaluation. The aim is to direct attention to
those works that because of a previous lack of adequate Editions have
attracted little critical attention, and also to re-open debate with
those frequently discussed texts, such as Confessions. Individual
papers* and panels are invited that situate Hogg's fiction within fresh
theoretical, comparative or cross-disciplinary contexts. Topics and
questions might include but are not limited to:
Hogg and Shakespeare, Milton, Pope. How did Byron, Keats, Shelley,
Southey react to Hogg's poetry? Hogg and Feminism; Confessions and
Scottish Gothic: a new idiom? Jeffrey and the Edinburgh Whigs. Editing
Hogg texts. Comparative studies of Hogg and Victorian poets and authors,
e.g., Dickens, Tennyson, Rossetti. Hogg and Environment; Diaspora;
Sexuality; Ireland; Music.*Reading time of around twenty minutes.
Workshops will explore pedagogical and theoretical approaches to Hogg
Studies in relation to:
Teaching Confessions
National Hogg(s)
Transatlantic Literature
Song
There will be an opportunity for post-graduate 'posters' (ten-minutes)
of work-in-progress at a convivial evening session.
Altrive and Abbotsford: Stirling is ideally placed to provide access to
the Scottish Borders. On Wednesday 8 August there will be a guided tour
of Scott's private apartments, library and gardens at Abbotsford. We
will explore the area around St. Mary's Loch, Ettrick, Yarrow, and the
landscape associated with Hogg's fiction.
