By chance I picked up a copy of Peter De Vries comic novel "Forever Panting" (1973). De Vries, a longtime editor at "The New Yorker,"  and master of literary word-play, was the author of a series of extremely witty novels. In the last chapter of "Forever Panting" I ran across a quote from Pushkin's masterpiece.

Habit is Heaven's own redress:
it takes the place of happiness.
Ch. 2, st. 31

Although unacknowledged, it seems to be in Nabokov's translation of "Onegin."
