To Jansy Mello,

Dear Jansy,

You refer to a translation of VN's "The Word", a pirate version anonymously signed "L.V.", that has been kicking around the internet for some time, complete with plagiarized commentary. I have a few things to say on this score, but shall limit myself at this busy time to mentioning that my (previous and legitimate) translation of this story appeared not very long ago in The New Yorker, that it has been included in the most recent edition of The Stories of Vladimir Nabokov (Knopf), and that someone who publishes an unsigned plagiarized work is a thief and a coward.

Best greetings,

Dmitri
