I'd like to thank Sam Umland for sharing excerpts of the
/Pale Fire/ treatment with us. Though I found some of the
changes from the book pointless (why make Kinbote blond),
I read the opening, with the first card showing as it falls
out of the envelope, "with my spine".

Despite Shade's occasional anglophilia (the rhyme with "again",
and the "whilst" in line 43), my imagined Shade sounds a
lot more like Henry Fonda than John Houseman.
