Dear Carolyn and other Nablers,

Girodias was actually thinking of calling a nightclub "Lolita" but eventually did not (thus sparing Nabokov having to bring lawyers against him).

Not that it will matter to most, but glancing at the interview with me again, I realize and belatedly recall that some  of it was shot not in the archive (ex laundry) room but in what had become the Nabokovs' secretary's (Mme Jacqueline Callier's) office).

Dear Brian,

I very much look forward to seeing the documentary. I just came across Girodias and the Lolita connection in the latest TLS. Seems he made a fortune off Lolita and sank the proceeds into a restaurant which went bust. I'm sure Nabokov would have approved.

Carolyn

Dear NabLers all:

Here's a documentary by Christopher Sykes, The Making of "Lolita": My Most Difficult Book, BBC, 1989, with Martin Amis, BB, A.S. Byatt, Maurice Girodias, Dmitri and Véra Nabokov and Edmund White. The room I'm being interviewed in is the "archive room," at the end of the corridor on the sixth floor of the Cygne wing of the Montreux Palace Hotel, a former laundry room which I turned into the archive room in 1979 and which stayed in that form until 1990, when Véra had to move out for renovations. Enjoy!
