Dear List,

How sad to hear that Sam is no longer with us. He was such a wonderful and friendly man! His knowledge of Nabokov was impeccable. We all owe him a lot. He was still in great shape last year in Paris, and I spent a great deal of time with him and his dear wife. He was planning to organize a conference on Nabokov. I am glad he had time to finish his book on Shakespeare and Nabokov. He leaves us a great legacy,
