I and my wife Sheila were deeply saddened by the news of Sam’s death. He was, as many of you know, one of the founding fathers of the  Nabokov
Society and  largely responsible  for its  inclusion in the MLA.  We knew him for nearly forty years and even briefly exchanged our homes in North
Carolina and California for a brief vacation, as well as many encounters at meetings in the US and abroad.  A couple  of weeks ago I sent off a brief review of
his new Nabokov  and Shakespeare book and sent him a preview copy.  I was rather surprised when I didn’t hear back.   He was a remarkable man  and will be
much missed by many.
