The Symposium 'Vladimir Nabokov and Translation' will be held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, October 27-28, 2018. You will find below a reminder of the Call for Papers in English, French and Russian. Deadline : June 15, 2018.
The Symposium in North Carolina is the second event in our Transatlantic Symposium. Please note that special attention will be given to papers tackling topics that have not been broached yet, such as intersemiotic translation or perspectives given by translators of Nabokov. We wish to underline that innovative approaches are strongly encouraged, especially when it comes to popular topics such as self-translation.

Transatlantic Symposium

No translator and translation theorist has brought an equal amount of attention to the humble applied craft of literary translation than Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977). Standing at the crossroads of five languages and a matching number of literary traditions (English, French, German, Italian, and Russian), he experienced translation on a level inaccessible to the majority of his predecessors, presaging and influencing our modern understanding of the indispensability of linguistic and cultural interconnection.
Nabokov’s entered literature as a translator. He claimed to have retold Mayne Reid’s The Headless Horseman in French alexandrines at eleven, while his adaptation of Romain Rolland’s Colas Breugnon became the most exacting rite of passage of his career in letters. Yet while the controversy stirred by his rendition of Aleksandr Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin and the methodology of “literalism” he applied therein forever changed the way we conceive of translation today, the totality of his work in translation remains the least appreciated and understood area of Nabokov’s creative enterprise.
To address this omission, Drs. Stanislav Shvabrin (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA) and Julie Loison-Charles (University of Lille, France) cordially invite you to submit a 500-word-long abstract explicating Nabokov’s legacy as translator and translation theorist as well as multiple other areas and instances of his engagement with “the art of verbal transmigration.”
We invite scholars interested in the multiple aspects of Nabokov’s legacy in translation to consider the following lines of inquiry:
* Nabokov as translator (with special emphasis on the vast number of works beyond Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Eugene Onegin);
* Nabokov’s translation theory, its evolution, and legacy;
* Translation as reflected in Nabokov’s works;
* Self-translation;
* Nabokov translated (collaboratively with the author and independently) or retranslated;
* Intersemiotic (audiovisual, cinematic, and theatrical) translations of Nabokov’s works;
* Teaching translation with Nabokov;
* The impact of translation on Nabokov’s writing.

Едва ли найдётся другой переводчик и теоретик перевода, который привлёк столько внимания к скромному прикладному ремеслу литературного перевода, как Владимир Набоков (1899-1977). Находясь на перекрёстке пяти языков и культур (англо-американской, итальянской, немецкой, русской и французской), Набоков осознавал и переживал перевод глубже, чем большинство его предшественников, предвосхитив и воздействовав на наши современные представления о существенности языковой и культурной взаимосвязанности.
Набоков пришёл в словесность как переводчик. Писатель вспоминал, как одиннадцати лет от роду пересказал «Безглавого всадника» Майн Рида французским александрийским стихом; его переложение «Кола Брюньона» Ромэна Роллана стало самым сложным вступительным испытанием его литературной юности. Несмотря на то что его перевод «Евгения Онегина» Александра Пушкина на английский язык и метод «буквализма», который он провозгласил и которому следовал, вызвал ожесточённые споры, сумма его экспериментов и достижений как переводчика остаётся наименее изученной и оцененной областью его творческих исканий.
Станислав Швабрин (Университет Северной Каролины в Чапел-Хилле, США) и Жюли Лоазон-Шарль (Лилльский университет Шарля де Голля, Франция) приглашают вас представить тезисы доклада (до 500 слов), посвященного как разным аспектам наследия Набокова-переводчика и теоретика перевода, так и различным иным областям, примерам и казусам его взаимодействия с «искусством словесной трансмиграции».
Коллеги, занятые изучением разных граней наследия Набокова-переводчика, приглашаются к рассмотрению таких исследовательских задач, как:
* Набоков-переводчик (особое внимание следует уделить большому количеству работ за пределами пары «Аня в Стране Чудес» и «Евгений Онегин»);
* Набоковская теория перевода, её развитие и наследие;
* Отражение перевода в творчестве Набокова-писателя;
* Автоперевод;
* Произведения Набокова как в «канонических» (как приготовленных совместно с автором, так и независимо от него), так и новых версиях;
* Межсемиотические (аудиовизуальные, кинематографические, драматические и проч.) переводы набоковских произведений;
* Преподавание перевода с помощью набоковских теорий и практик;
* Воздействие перевода на набоковскую стилистику;

Aucun traducteur et traductologue n’a suscité autant d’intérêt pour l’art plein d’humilité de la traduction littéraire que Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977). À la croisée de cinq langues et traditions littéraires (anglaises, françaises, allemandes, italiennes et russes), il vivait la traduction à un niveau hors d’atteinte pour la plupart de ses prédécesseurs ; son approche a annoncé et influencé notre compréhension moderne du caractère indispensable de l’interconnexion entre le linguistique et le culturel.
L’entrée de Nabokov en littérature se fit par le biais de la traduction. Il affirmait avoir traduit The Headless Horseman de Mayne Reid vers le français (et en alexandrins) à l’âge de onze ans. Par ailleurs, son adaptation de Colas Breugnon de Romain Rolland fut certainement son rite de passage le plus méticuleux pour devenir écrivain. Cependant, bien que la controverse soulevée par sa version de Eugene Onegin d’Aleksandr Pouchkine et le « littéralisme » qu’il y a employé aient pour toujours modifié notre conception de la traduction, l’intégralité de son œuvre en traduction reste le domaine de son travail créatif le moins apprécié et le moins compris.
Pour combler ce manque, Dr. Stanislav Shvabrin (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA) et Dr. Julie Loison-Charles (Université de Lille) vous invitent à soumettre vos propositions de communication (d’une longueur de 500 mots) exposant l’héritage de Nabokov en tant que traducteur et traductologue, ainsi que dans de nombreux autres domaines et exemples de son engagement dans « l’art de la transmigration verbale ».
Nous invitons les chercheurs intéressés par les multiples aspects de l’héritage de Nabokov en traduction à prendre en considération les pistes suivantes :
* Nabokov traducteur (avec un intérêt particulier pour les œuvres autres qu’Alice au pays des merveilles et Eugene Onegin) ;
* Nabokov et sa théorie de la traduction, son évolution et son héritage ;
* La traduction telle qu’elle apparait dans les écrits de Nabokov ;
* L’auto-traduction ;
* Traduire Nabokov (en collaboration avec l’auteur et indépendamment) ou le retraduire ;
* La traduction intersémiotique (audiovisuelle, cinématographique, théâtrale…) de l’œuvre de Nabokov ;
* Enseigner la traduction avec Nabokov ;
* L’impact de la traduction sur l’écriture de Nabokov.
