The MLA Newsletter recently published tables of
(1) American university English Depts that turned
out between 42 & 128 PhDs in English (1993-1998) and
(2) that turned out between 18 and 138 foreign
language PhDs in the same period.

Looking over the tables I compiled a very
rough and ready list of institutions that I thought would be good places to work
on Nabokov. My opinions are just that and quite likely other choices might be
equally good or better. My apologies to any places slighted. The suggestions are
based chiefly upon the presence of Nabokov specialists on the faculty and,
in the case of Russian, programs big enough to offer good all round
training.
My lists are in no particular
order.
English: Univ. of California at Berkeley; UCLA; U.
of Virginia; U. of Washington; Univ. of Wisconsin (Madison); Cornell: USC;
Princeton.
Russian: Univ. of Wisconsin; UC, Berkeley; UCLA;
Yale; Stanford; University of Virginia; University of
Washington.

Further suggestions are welcome.
