(Nabokov, Vladimir) Funke, SarahVERA'S BUTTERFLIES...FIRST EDITIONS BY VLADIMIR
NABOKOV INSCRIBED TO HIS WIFE New York Glenn Horowitz Bookseller, Inc
1999, Octavo, (xii); 13- 267; (v), bound in maroon wrappers with gilt titles
on upper cover and spine. Designed by Jerry Kelly, Typeset in Hermann Zapf's
Melior type and Printed by The Steinhour Press in Lunenburg, Vermont, this is
one of 2,000 copies printed, of which 500 were clothbound. This exquisitely
produced and exhaustively researched catalog offers a magnificent glimpse into
the lesser known regions of Vladimir Nabokov's life. His deep affection for
his wife, Vera, was tenderly expressed with ethereal illustrations of
butterflies, combining his expert knowledge of lepidoptery, his keen ability
as an artist and his literary imagination, resulting in a very moving glimpse
of the complex nature of an extraordianry man. Nabokov's exquisite drawings of
butterflies accompanying his signature on his work were given only to those
close to him and none with more beauty than those done for Vera. This is a
fine copy, with price list and ! and a four page dedication, "Verochka
Verochka Amusing The Muse", laid-in. Beautifully illustrated in full color,
this is a scarce and important bibliographical reference, providing a wealth
of scholarship about the author, with contributions by Brian Boyd, Stephen Jay
Gould, Kurt Johnson, James Slater, Stacy Schiff and Michael Wood. Edited by
Glenn Horowitz. Price: USD 300.00other
currencies order no.
