Although Brian Boyd and I once agreed, rather too quickly I think, to
disagree about the merits of the work of R. Crumb, I am glad about his
enthusiasm for Art Spiegelman, and his catholic taste. The pantheon of Great
Writers should serve to help us to recognize our contemporaries, not diminish
them. As You Like It, The Marriage of Figaro, Candide, The Gambler, (this is
fun... ) The Band Wagon, Desperately Seeking Susan, Chocolat, Vatel, Romeo and
