I realized too late that the remark "Better late than never" in the given context may have connoted a moral judgment that I neither intended nor feel. I meant only to suggest that WE need not be bound by old prejudices. If we die before casting them aside it is sad but they need not oppress our spirit in its serenity and, one would like to think, its eternal good humour.
