Why is it dismal? 

Is it not good that Nabokov gains increasing interest and recognition? 

Or are the dissertations on ‘silly’ or peripheral (to Nabokov) subjects?

EDRESPONSE. Tina Colquoun is quite right, of course. I suppose it was the thought of trying to keep up with all this material. But one of the great virtues of Dissertation Abstracts is that you can skim the abstracts and pretty much determine what is relevant to your interest at a given time.
