EDNOTE seems to be something about the Maar story
that seems to raise the blood pressure of some subscribers. I do not
understand why this should be the case. It is simply another topic to be
examined so that subscribers get sufficient information to make their own
informed opinions.
I hasten to add that I do not
include Ole Nyegaard among the intemperate and I join him in the thought that
undue fervor is not helpful in regard to the status of God or
Nabokov.

Subject: Michael Maar
Dear List
I'm terribly sorry if I sidetrack an interesting
theological discussion on VN's divinity, but still...
Plese enlighten me, I still fail to see what it is that
Michael Maar has discovered.
I have read his article in the Franfurter Allgemeine,
and the TLS thing, not to speak of the horrid short story by Lichenberg, and
Maar fails to convince me in anyway. Dieter Zimmer is absolutely right in
terming the parrallels between the short story and VN's Lolita vague. It amuses
me furthermore that Maar in order to prove his find as, well, a find has to
draw in parallels to other works by VN; here the parallels get more than just
vague - they become watered down. Why didn't (or did he?) Maar read the
articles by Dolinin and Couturier before making headlines with what should a
been an very short footnote?
Best
Ole Nyegaard (who neither belives in God nor in VN as
an ersatz-bodhisattva), Denmark
