In the new complete New Yorker, I've come across a story, "The Lyre," which is not in the collected stories.  I understand that it was taken from The Gift (with material added), which is the only VN novel I have not read.  (yes, yes, I'll get to it.)  I'm curious, though, if VN thought this simply an excerpt or a valid work in it's own right.  In which case, why wasn't it included in the stories.
