A kind subscriber has written to remind me that Novaya Zemlya is not a peninsula, but an archipeligo. My apologies!
It featured quite prominently in Berlin's Russian newspaper Rul' throughout the 1920s, by the way: there were several attempts to get to the North pole, as well as several disappearances of the explorers (Ammundsen disappeared twice; the second time was fatal).
