What Victor Fet describes is the use of "envoi" I'm familiar with in English, along with the extended sense of a poem or other short piece to "send off" the reader at the end of a long work. An example is Kipling's poem "L'Envoi" ("He travels the fastest who travels alone")--a cynical coda to the cynical /Story of the Gadsbys/. I imagine this is the intended sense in /Lectures on Literature/. Jerry Friedman
