every PhDs?) whereas the poet is, simply Shade, John Shade.

Not just in the index. Although Kinbote and Shade seem to be equally well if differently educated, whenever a title is mentioned, Kinbote is always "Dr" and Shade always "Mr" - - reversing the two characters Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde of course. A subtle clue perhaps but hard to argue away.
