I don't recall any references to Freud in Pale Fire (do you?) but there are references to hypnosis.
Dear Carolyn,

Surely you know lines 924-929, which VN claims to be quoting from memory in an interview in SO. (You look it up this time!)

I loathe [...]     (924)
[...]
Brutes, bores, class-conscious Philistines, Freud, Marx,  (929)
Fake thinkers, puffed-up poets, frauds and sharks. (930)

In the interview VN gives this as an example of when he has attributed his own views to a character, in this case Shade.

And see Kinbote's commentary on line 929, headed "Freud". This is the only line, indeed the only word, Kinbote comments on in this passage. He gives hilarious examples of psychoanalytic scripture. One imagines this is a rare instance where VN has attributed his own views to Kinbote also.

Best,

Anthony
