My own theory on this had always been that, while writing the note to
line 71, Kinbote had not noticed that the bird named by Saumel Shade
was a waxwing (he quickly digresses into the etymology of Shade's
mother's maiden name, Lukin). In the note to line one he tells us "My
knowledge of garden Aves had been limited to those of northern Europe.
. ." Thus when he pedantically looks up the taxonomic details on
Waxwings for the index, he belatedly discovers the coincidence--too
late to change notes to line 1 or 71. But Matt Ross's "Cedarn" link
adds a nice, ironic coda.
