Literature, like The American Scholar, Fergalicious or
The Family Guy, is a cultural production not a
biological spasm. But humans do need to be understood
as more than cultural and textual entities, if only
because they are not side-effects of too much
reading—--a litotes Nabokov would have punched joyfully
over the crossbar.
