I hate to post only when I'm disagreeing, but I think the
variant line works fine with "Kinbote". There are other
examples where Shade accents the same word in different ways
in one line--not just line 965 (which creates an irresistible
temptation to revise it), but the far more pleasant line
958: "In carrel and in car, and in my chair," where "and"
and "in" reverse their roles. Another one with "in" is line
152. My totally subjective impression is that Shade is proud
of making "poor" be both stressed and unstressed.
By the way, I'm not at all sure that line 213 has an anapest.
I think "syllogism" is supposed to be three syllables.
(Compare Wordsworth: "Of Newton with his prism and silent face"
--/Prelude/, 3, 61.) An anapest I see no doubt about,
though, is in line 425, "Was mentioned twice, as usual just
behind".
R. S. Gwynn suggested Kit Smart, but no one would dare suggest
John Clare right there with Baudelaire. I've got to say
I don't like the rhythm with "Kit Smart".
Anyway, Kinbote certainly suspects it refers to him.
