In chapter 41 of Nicholas Nickelby I found the incident I was thinking of, but the vegetables thrown over the wall at Mrs Nickleby (the object of the madman's desire) consist of first a large cucumber, then a fine marrow which is followed by "a shower of onions, turnip-radishes, and other small vegetables."

No cabbages.

I think it was a madman in Dickens' Nicholas Nickelby - - he was too shy to talk to people, so he threw cabbages at them. I'll have to see if I can find it - - somewhere toward the end I think.

P.S. But  (rhetorically) who is that man throwing cabbages over the wall?
