Vancouver's Bend Sinister inspired by that book by Nabokov

Posted By DARREN MACDONALD, THE SUDBURY STAR

Bend Sinister, who performs at the Townhouse Friday with Mobile and Inward Eye, has evolved through numerous influences since its inception in 2000 in Vancouver. Lineup changes since then has seen 12 different people in the group, with frontman Dan Moxon as the only original member still in the band.

Recently nominated for a CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award, Bend Sinister released its sophomore album, Stories of Brothers, Tales of Lovers, last fall through Distort Light. The Star talked to Moxom on Tuesday.

Your name comes from a Vladimir Nabokov book that rails against conformity. Is that a theme for the band?

DM:Somewhat. I think we named the band that because we really liked the term and the idea that came from the book by Nabokov. But that is a very good way of putting it. The music we do, it's hard to kind of find a place for it. I don't want to say we're unique and sound like I'm full of myself, but we're doing something different than a lot of things out there.
