I just taught Despair, and I'm 99.9% sure that line does not appear in it. (In the English, that is.)

Cheers,

Dear List,

This question regards a very old thread: "All the information I have about myself is from forged documents."

I'm pretty sure that this line, attributed to Nabokov in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, comes from the Stoppard/Fassbinder film adaptation of Despair and not from the novel itself Am I right? Or did I completely miss it or otherwise managed to forget it? It's been a few years since I've read Despair.

Best,

Juan

EDNote: I've read Despair pretty closely several times in both languages, and I have no memory of this line there. ~SB
