In defense of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's recent move to tighten restrictions on graphic sexual content in manga and anime, Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara has said the conclusions he made in a 1972 book about sex education were wrong.

"I was wrong back then," Ishihara said during a regular press conference held on Dec. 17, referring to a passage in his book "Shinjitsu no Sei-kyoiku" (The True Sex Education), in which he claimed that "no book can motivate children to commit a crime or turn to juvenile delinquency."

Citing Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 sensational novel "Lolita," a story about a middle-aged man who becomes obsessed and romantically involved with a young girl, Ishihara stated, "I found the novel shocking at that time, but the story is beautifully narrated and I think it is acceptable," while criticizing certain types of modern comics as harmful for their depictions of extreme sexual acts such as rape.
