An important correction to my “Lolita’s
Ape: Caged at Last,” published in the most recent Nabokovian
(No. 67; Fall 2011): Due to my confusion of
Dieter Zimmer’s 1989
annotations to Lolita with their 2006
expansions (the publication years of the relevant editions of the
German translations
in the Rowohlt Gesammelte Werke vol. 8), I mistakenly
gave him precedence in discovering the Life
magazine photographs taken by chimpanzees of their own cage bars. In fact these were first noticed by Michael Juliar
(author of Vladimir Nabokov: A
Descriptive Bibliography, Garland, 1986) and posted to NABOKV-L on
Oct. 26, 1998. Mr. Juliar’s note can be
