Does anyone know the copyright status of the 1937 British edition of
Despair? My understanding, based almost entirely on half-understood
misapprehensions and ignorance, is that the copyright of the majority
of VN's Russian works were in effect "reset" by the act of translation;
so the late-1950s through early-1970s translations are essentially
treated as new works and their copyright status reflects this; however,
the 1937 edition of Despair *should be*, based on my layperson's
understanding, have entered the public domain along with the British
translation of Camera Obscura--can anyone comment on this, or offer any
insights on how a curious reader can go about reading these rare bits
of Nabopocrypha?
