I am so sorry to hear of the death of Phyllis Roth. I only knew her a little, but she was a kind, generous, insightful, and truly modest person. I found this when I invited her to be a main speaker at the all-day Inner Circle Seminar on Nabokov's short story "Signs and Symbols" that I organised in London on 11 May 2008 for the 60th anniversary of its publication on 15 May 1948.

Before the seminar, over breakfast at Durrants Hotel, she astonished me by telling me of her other great enthusiasm, Bram Stoker's "Dracula".

During the seminar, she taught us a lot, but It was typical of her that she wrote afterwards: "The whole experience for me was far more that of learning, really, than of my sharing -- which was of course especially wonderful for me."

Especially for people who knew her personally, I’m sorry to report that Phyllis A. Roth, professor emerita and former dean of the faculty at Skidmore College, died of pancreatic cancer on March 25, 2012, in upstate New York. Phyllis will be remembered as the editor of Critical Essays on Vladimir Nabokov (Boston: G. K. Hall, 1984) and the author of, among other articles, “Toward the Man Behind the Mystification,” published in Nabokov’s Fifth Arc, eds. J. E. Rivers and Charles Nicol.

Phyllis was my colleague for 25 years, a dear friend for over 36 years. Preparatory to a scheduled memorial service in her honor, to be held on the Skidmore College campus in May, I’d appreciate hearing from other Nabokovians who might care to comment on any aspect of her scholarship or participation in the launching of the Nabokov Society.
