i believe there is a connection direct/indirect with A.Pushkin tale Skazka o rybake i rybke -  Tale about a Fisherman and Fish. Also traditional limit of wishes is 3 and it may vary of course, from story to story (Nabokov case). A person who breaks the limit  or exceeds  cherta (a line or a border) - "gets" into devil since in Russian "chert" (devil) has some linguistic connection with a line or a border.

Subject: [NABOKV-L] Tolstoy's and Nabokov's Devil: query and rectification

Did Frau Monde indicate Savonarola as the  monk in Tuscany  whom, in the past, she had incorporated?

When I observed the similarities between the limits set by Tolstoy's devil and Nabokov's ( from sunrise to sunset), I was imprecise.
Tolstoy made it clear that, since sunset reaches different parts of the Earth at distinct moments, the right sunset was the one that exactly corresponded to the contestant's point of departure, not to when darkness overcame him en route
Nabokov's Frau Monde's time followed a mechanical device: the time-limit was not the sunset but the midnight hour.
