My thanks to  Schuman, Miale, and Efremov for their “Goon”  comments.   The term  seems to be rather common in hockey parlance and often

shows up  as a common term  in the sport. It is even cited in a blog about Cornell (in reference to non-Cornell) hockey hoodlums. There are indeed red hockey-themed themed red neckties---as pictured above.
