Brian raises a good point. The Library of America volumes,
though not quite full-fledged scholarly editions, contain many
valuable tidbits. One of the purposes of Nabokv-L, as I see it, is
to share information like this that others may have missed during
the "in-progress" phase of research. So, thanks Brian!
Dieter Zimmer's and Maurice Couturier's annotations are harder of
access for folks not based in French- or German-speaking countries.
Bringing them up raises an important point--that these annotations
really do need to be collected in a format that is widely accessible
to US-based researchers, and to scholars in other countries without
broad holdings in French and German translations of Russian or
Anglo-American literature. What we need, I think, are translations
of these into English--all of the Zimmer (et al.) annotations
collected in one volume, and the same for the Couturier
annotations. These are classic works that deserve international
audiences and regular citation.
